Mathematics

Intent

Our curriculum intent for Maths is to ensure that by the end of their primary education, all children are fluent and confident with the basic principles of Mathematics. At Christ Church, we encourage 'can do' attitudes with regards to all aspects of Maths and promote the fact that everybody can do it. We teach our Maths curriculum in manageable steps to ensure that substantial progress is made by all pupils and that they are all achieving.

 

It is the aim of our Maths curriculum to ensure our pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • are able to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language

Implementation

EYFS

Maths is taught directly every morning in EYFS. Each lesson starts with a main carpet input where the children are taught a key concept through a story or game. Children then work in small, adult-led groups to practice this concept further. Learning incorporates concrete resources in all aspects of maths and we place a high value on children learning through repetitive games and songs linked to their learning. At the end of each learning sequence, the children consolidate their learning by answering questions independently. 

Maths can be found embedded in both the indoor and outdoor EYFS provision. Children independently access these activities throughout the day; exploring different contexts through stories, songs, puzzles, puppet play and games. Experienced staff are skilled in further consolidating learning through careful questioning and prompting. We celebrate maths in EYFS through Floorbooks and Maths in Action display boards- where progression in learning is evident. 

KS1 and KS2

Maths is taught daily in both key stages. 

We follow guidance from White Rose Maths as this is a progressive, government-approved scheme. We use a concrete- pictorial- abstract approach to teaching new concepts and ensure that children have many opportunities to deepen their understanding before moving on. Our maths curriculum ensures children make progress in their secure foundations of maths as well as applying their learning to problem-solving concepts. 

We teach arithmetic skills regularly and assess children to ensure we know what they need to work on. Children enjoy maths at Christ Church Pellon and know what they need to do to improve. Children learn mathematical vocabulary and confidently use this when reasoning with number. 

To ensure we retrieve knowledge regularly, we use Flashback Fours daily to rehearse a mixed-bag of previous learning. This allows children to remember methods deeply and recall facts quicker. 

We embed maths throughout other areas of the curriculum where possible. For example, in History, we learn about Roman Numerals and in Geography we use graphs and direction to navigate maps.
