Online Safety

Social networking is hugely popular. Many young people are sophisticated in the way they use social media apps and websites, tailoring their communication for different audiences, and accessing them from a range of devices including smartphones, tablets, and games consoles. But social media, like all forms of public communication, comes with some risks. Not all of these risks turn into actual problems; and if children never face any risks, they never learn how to deal with them. By helping your child understand what the risks are, you can play a big part in preventing them from turning into problems.

Please ensure that your children are safe when online. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Coward for further information

Please find below some information and resources you may find useful in order to keep your child safe online and to teach them about the risks of being online.

It's extremely difficult for parents to stay fully in-touch with the ever changing array of social media. The NSPCC has teamed up with O2 to produce an excellent guide.

If you have any concerns at all about online safety, you need to report them, click here to learn about how to report concerns to the police.

Online Apps

Many of our older pupils have started to use apps that are available. However, it is important that parents / carers fully understand the apps that they are allowing their children to use.

National Online Safety have a very useful website where you will find helpful guides. Please click here.

Safer Internet is a service to promote the safe and responsible use of technology, which calls on young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers, and more to join together in helping to create a better internet.

Using the internet safely and positively is a key message that we promote at school.

There are also top tips, a quiz and films which you can use at home with your child. Some other resources which you may find helpful in supporting your child online are:

●    Advice for parents and carers from Childnet

●    Tips, advice and guides for parents and carers from the UK Safer Internet Centre

●    Guides on popular apps and games from NetAware

●    Reviews and information about games, apps, TV shows and websites from Common Sense Media

●    Help on using parental controls and privacy settings from Internet Matters

●    Information and reporting of online grooming or abuse from CEOP

Online safety is an important issue which as a school we are committed to teaching our young people about.

If you have any concerns or questions about keeping your child safe online, please do get in touch with your child’s class teacher or the pastoral team.
