Welcome to our Reception Class page
Autumn 1 - All about me
What an amazing start to the school year! The children have settled into school life here at Christ Church Pellon amazingly! We have been very busy learning all about ourselves and getting to know each other. We have had lots of discussions about where we live, who we live with and our likes and dislikes. To finish a long half term we have been reading Funny Bones, in literacy, and carried out lots of different activities linked to the book. The children made their own skeletons, maps of the town on a dark dark night and showed an interest about bones in our bodies!! Please take a look at our fantastic work!
In maths we have been learning to sort, match and compare objects. We have been outside lots and used natural objects to help us with our early counting and number skills! Inside the classroom we have been exploring autumn objects and learning our subitising skills.
Take a look at what we will be learning this half term:
Phonics
In reception class we learn phonics daily. We follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds
Revised. Please see below a parent information sheet to guide you through how your
child will learn and develop.
Spelling
At Christ Church we have expectations for spelling at the end of each year group. We talked to lots of you about these at Parents’ Evening. Here are the spelling expectations for the end of Reception, along with some ideas to help your child learn to read, write and spell. This will earn them the best possible start for year 1 and help to develop their writing.
We of course are learning these In school but the more your child practices these, the more they will achieve.

Ideas to help your child at home
- Cut out the words and use them as flashcards for your child to read through.
- Cut up the words and hide them around the house to read and find.
- Stick the words to a dice – you can always use a tissue cube for this and play bingo, matching words to the grid.
- Word Scramble:Scramble up the letters of each word and have your child put them in the correct order. Can you do it as well?? Who will win?
- Get a tub of magnetic letters and with your child find the letters to match the words and then read them.
This is a great use for a fridge door!
- Spelling Puzzle: Make a home-made puzzle by writing each word in large letters on card and then having the child cut each card apart. The fun is in putting the puzzle back together!
- Flip and Rainbow Write: Flip a word card and have your child go through the rainbow, painting or writing each word flipped in rainbow colours. Make the first word red, second orange, third yellow, etc. OR write each letter in a colour of the rainbow.
- Water Paint: Use water and a paintbrush to water paint the spelling words. On a hot, sunny day, words disappear quickly—so spellers have to move fast!
- Stairsteps: Write the words as if they are stairs, adding one letter at a time.

With a computer and other fun electronics:
- Type it Out: Open up a Word document and have your child type the spelling words on the screen as you call them out. Enlarge the font, make it a cool colour!
- Spell on Tape: Have your child spell the words into a tape recorder or using the voice recorder on your phone or computer.
- Video Record: Pull out the flip cam, I pad or phone and take a video of your child spelling the words. Have him put on a funny hat, dress-up, or use a silly prop to add to the fun.
With anything and everything else:
- Spelling Word Hunt: Look for those spelling list words in the newspaper or in another book, magazine, or text! Circle them or use a highlighter to highlight them.
- Scrabble/ Boggle: Use these game pieces to ‘build’ spelling words on a baking tray, on the table, or on the floor.
- Crazy Words: Put something ‘crazy’ (like jelly, shaving cream, sand, or rice) on a baking sheet, and have your child use his finger to ‘write’ spelling words on the tray.
- Paint bag Writing: Put poster paint in a large-sized ziplock bag and seal it tightly! Then have your child use her fingertip to write the letters of each word on the paint bag.
- Stamp It: Use alphabet letter stamps to ‘stamp’ the spelling words, first by looking at the words and then on your own!
We are sure you will have lots of your own ideas as well!!
Please share how your child is doing with us. If you want any more help or support please ask our Reception team.
