Welcome to Year 6!
Here you can access information about what we are learning in Year 6. We will showcase children's work on a regular basis to highlight what they have done throughout the year. Please check regularly for updates.
Curriculum
We have a broad and balanced curriculum in Year 6. As well as English and Maths, we study some exciting topics such as Vikings, Whitby and even Ancient Islamic Civilisation!
Autumn 1
Robinwood
In September, some of us were lucky enough to go on a residential trip to Robinwood. We took part in a wide range of activities from 'team building' escape rooms to high and fast ziplines- even raft building on the lake (and yes- the adults DID get wet!).
VIKINGS
During Autumn 1, Year 6 learnt all about the Vikings: where they lived, what they did and how they came to be known as the strong army they were. We researched ancient artefacts from the time and had a Viking immersion day in which we tasted some Viking recipes, played Viking games and researched areas further.
Animals including humans.
In Autumn 1, we investigate our circulatory system; the way it works and the importance of it in everyday life. We look closely at what makes up our blood and circulatory system. We learned what parts make up the heart and how important healthy eating and exercise is to maintain clean arteries and veins.
Autumn 2
Light
In Autumn 2, we investigate light; the way it moves and the importance of it in everyday life. We look closely at different sources of light and how, when it passes through a prism, we can see the spectrum of what light is made of and how it refracts when passing through water.
Whitby
Year 6 research the coastal town of Whitby and its rich history. We explore maps of Whitby and understand how to read ordnance symbols to identify areas of interest. We recognise human and physical features and investigate the River Esk and how it has contributed to the growth of Whitby.
Spring 1
Electricity
Year 6 looked at what it takes to make a complete circuit and how to draw circuit diagrams using official electrical symbols. They also looked at the meaning of volts, current and resistance and how if these vary their electrical circuits would too. We also made our very own dimmer switches using an everyday classroom item- a pencil!
Spring 2
Summer
Homework
Parents and Carers often ask how they can further support their child at home. With this in mind, we have a list of websites that are really useful in helping your children practice skills taught in class.
Reading regularly, practicing timetables and using SATS revision guides are all supportive ways you can prepare your child for secondary school.
Helpful information
The word list below shows what you should be able to spell and use by the end of year 6. Practice words on Spell shed to keep them fresh!
Children are expected to spell and apply these words to their writing by the end of Year 6.
